WEBSIGHT

Focus Guides is run by the award-winning British travel writer and author Andrew Sanger, together with his partner Gerry Dunham. Andrew writes and edits the site, while Gerry deals with day to day administration. The site was relaunched in 2009 after a move from online bookselling to online travel guides.

Our story

Focus Guides was created by Andrew Sanger in 1994 as an online travel bookstore, selling guidebooks at reduced prices, with free postage. He later added the WebSight pages, a directory of travel websites, gradually adding any useful sites that he came across in his work as a writer of travel guides and articles.

With the growing success of major online bookseller Amazon.com, and subsequently Amazon.co.uk, who were offering larger discounts and faster delivery, Focus Guides became less viable, and opted to become an online retailer for the UK books wholesaler Gardeners. Eventually Amazon's progress made even this unfeasible.

In October 2009, Focus Guides relaunched, gradually building a range of one-page travel guides to destinations personally visited and researched by Andrew Sanger.

Our plans

All our guides are free to use or print. More will be added at a leisurely pace. Our income comes from pay-per-click Google advertising and links to recommended guidebooks purchased from Amazon. For the time being, we've kept the WebSight directory online (though we haven't updated it since 2009), but the emphasis now is on adding new one-page guides to cities, islands and resorts.
